[infobulle=]Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has reportedly officially re-opened the Chingola “B” Mine, 18 years after operations ceased, marking a major milestone in the company’s growth strategy and Zambia’s drive to expand copper production.
Group Chief Executive Officer, Deshnee Naidoo, alongside senior management and employees led the re-opening on Thursday, signaling renewed momentum for both the Nchanga and Konkola mining operations.
Naidoo said the mine was projected to produce more than 200,000 tonnes of ore per month and that the reopening was more than a milestone.
She said the reopening symbolized the continued growth and transformation of KCM.
“The reopening was more than a milestone, it symbolizes the continued growth and transformation of KCM,” Naidoo said.
She noted that KCM was strategically positioned to become one of Zambia’s leading copper producers, supported by significant mineral resources and ongoing expansion projects.
“I expect to see quality mining, and with that will come greater opportunities for expansion and increased production,” Naidoo said.
She said the future of KCM mining meant success at both Nchanga and Konkola, particularly as Konkola remained central to major expansion plans.
Naidoo disclosed that KCM had partnered with Teincomin to revive operations using safer, more modern, and efficient mining methods.

“As we celebrate this achievement today, safety remains our highest priority. I do not want a single tonne of copper produced before safety is fully assured. No copper production before safety. Safety remains our number one job,” she emphasized.
Naidoo also highlighted broader operational improvements currently underway across KCM, including upgrades at the Tailings Leach Plant and the construction of a new six-kilometre pipeline aimed at improving tailings feed efficiency.
She stressed that achieving Zambia’s ambition of producing 3 million tonnes of copper annually by 2031 will require strong collaboration between employees, contractors, and business partners.
“We have the resources, strong partnerships, and dedicated teams capable of helping Zambia achieve its copper production ambitions,” Naidoo said.
Acting KCM Chief Operating Officer, Praveen Sharma, said the re-opening demonstrated KCM’s commitment to supporting Zambia’s target of producing 3 million tonnes of copper annually by 2031.
Sharma said Vedanta Resources aimed to contribute 300,000 tonnes toward that national goal.
KCM Nchanga Operations Director Cross Silwamba described the re-opening as a historic moment and urged employees to maintain the highest safety standards.
“We need to work safely and ensure that the same way we come to work is the same way we return home to our families. Our families depend on us, and safety must always come first,” Silwamba said.
