Cairn Energy plc announced that it has commenced drilling operations on two wells offshore West Greenland. The AT-7 well in the Atammik Block, approximately 160 kilometres offshore Nuuk, west Greenland and the LF-7 well in the Lady Franklin Block approximately 300 kilometres offshore Nuuk have both started operating. Cairn starts drilling operations in Greenland

British oil explorer Cairn Energy said on Friday it started drilling two wells off the coast of Greenland, a day after environmental protesters were removed from its rig in the Arctic.

Earlier this week Cairn said the presence of Greenpeace activists who suspended themselves from the Leiv Eiriksson drilling rig for four days had not delayed its schedule. Harsh weather means there is a narrow summer window for Arctic exploration.

The Edinburgh-based company on Thursday filed a lawsuit against Greenpeace to deter it from disrupting its drilling plans in Greenland.

The company, which plans to drill a total of four wells in Greenland this summer, said that drilling operations commenced at one well on its Atammik Block and one well on its Lady Franklin Block off the coast of West Greenland.

Greenpeace also tried to disrupt Cairn's drilling plans in 2010. The group believes that tackling an offshore spill would be very difficult due to the harsh conditions and remoteness of the Arctic.

LONDON, June 2 (Reuters) - UK-based Cairn Energy (CNE.L) has filed a legal action in the Netherlands, seeking fines of up to 2 million euros a day ($2.9 million) if Greenpeace protesters again disrupt the explorer's drilling plans offshore Greenland.

A Cairn spokesman said on Thursday the action was intended as a deterrent after Greenpeace ended a four-day protest which involved protesters hanging suspended from a drilling rig in a plastic pod.

It was also intended "to ensure the safety of those involved in its operations," Cairn said in a statement.
Last year, Greenpeace activists also launched similar action against a Cairn rig offshore Greenland.

Cairn is leading a charge into offshore Greenland, which explorers believe could hold billions of barrels of oil. Exxon Mobil (XOM.N), Husky Energy (HSE.TO) and others also plan to drill there.
The track record of companies suing protest groups is a chequered one, with court action often serving to garner publicity and sympathy for the campaigners.
