Dow Jones reported that UK listed Vedanta Resources PLC may list its Zambian copper operations, Konkola Copper Mines PLC in London as early as next month although the timeline could slip into the second half of the year.
Vedanta Resources said in November it planned to raise at least USD 1.1 billion by listing at least 25% of KCM's shares on the London Stock Exchange by the end of last year. The listing was put on hold until earlier this month.
The FTSE 100 miner said that during its full year results earlier in May that it was planning to list KCM's shares by the end of 2011 in an effort to unlock value for shareholders.
KCM produced 217,000 tonnes of copper cathode in fiscal year ended March 31st 2010, at an integrated cash cost of about USD 1.98 per pound. In November, the company said it planned to ramp up annual production to more than 400,000 tons and reduce integrated cash costs below USD 1 per pound by the fiscal year ending March 31st 2014.

Vedanta’s Zambian Copper Unit Hasn’t Decided on Next Step Towards IPO Yet

Vedanta said last November it aimed to carry out a $1.1 billion IPO for Konkola in 2011. Konkola, which produced about 217,000 metric tons of copper in 2010, aims for annual output of 400,000 metric tons once its Konkola Deep Mine Project comes on stream. Photographer: Adeel Halim/Bloomberg
Vedanta Resources Plc (VED)’s Zambian unit, Konkola Copper Mines, said it hasn’t reached any decision on its next steps toward an initial public offering.
The Sunday Times reported on May 22 that Vedanta, a metals producer with assets from Africa to Australia, planned to raise 4.5 billion pounds ($7.3 billion) by selling shares in Konkola. The London-based newspaper, which didn’t say where it obtained the information, said the IPO might happen as soon as next month.
“The company has not reached a decision on its next steps with regards to the listing process,” Konkola, based in Chingola, northern Zambia, said today in an e-mailed statement.

Zambia is Africa’s top copper producer, aiming to more than double production to about 2 million metric tons a year by 2015, Finance and National Planning Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane said in February.
