NEW DELHI -(Dow Jones)- Cairn Energy PLC (CRNCY) expects the Indian government to clear by May 20 the proposed sale of its stake in Cairn India Ltd. (532792.BY) to Vedanta Resources PLC (VED.LN), its chief executive said Tuesday.
"I'm hopeful we'll get government approval by May 20," Bill Gammell told reporters.
Last August, London-listed miner Vedanta proposed buying a majority stake in Cairn India, but the deal has been delayed due to longer-than-expected government and regulatory approvals in India.
Cairn Energy extended the deadline for the stake sale by more than a month to May 20 in order to accommodate the completion of an open offer by Sesa Goa Ltd. (500295.BY) and as an Indian ministerial panel scrutinizes the deal.
Gammell declined comment when asked if the deadline will need to be extended beyond May 20.
