Zambia copper and mining industry keep the country economic
Tuesday, 15 Feb 2011The increased investment in the Zambia’s copper and mining industry in Zambia, Africa’s leading copper producer should be lauded because it shows that the country’s economic growth is on the right path attributable to the prevailing economic conditions.
Mr Kipyego Cheluge Kenya’s High Commissioner to Zambia said that his country was impressed with Zambia’s commitment to lure investment into the sector and that the country has so far been relatively successful in achieving its objective of attracting credible investment in the mining industry, the country’s mainstay.
In a statement after touring the Konkola Copper Mine operations in Zambia at the weekend Zambia has so far been relatively successful in achieving its objective of attracting investors into the country especially the mining sector due to the conducive business environment that the Government has put in place which has led to increased investor interest and confidence.
Kenya is keen to enhance bilateral cooperation with Zambia in the aspects that would push comprehensive cooperation to a new level in areas such as mineral development where Zambia has scored success. The planned initiative to establish value addition projects in Zambia should be encouraged and supported because the country would not only raise revenue from the sale of finished products but also create jobs and lower cost of production in certain sectors.
The High Commissioner said that the private sector have an obligation to ensure sustainable livelihood programs in the community to stimulate employment and sustainable economic activities in order to ensure that economic life continues outside the mines during and after mining. He called on mining companies to continue investing in the communities so that the local people can benefit from the natural resources.
He commended that KCM, a unit of Vedanta Resources Plc for investing in young professional staff and that KCM and other mining companies should ensure the development of a pool of professional and technical personnel to feed the mining industry especially with the coming of latest technology being used by mining companies.
Mr Cheluuge was impressed to see young people in key positions at KCM and that gave him pride and hope for the future. He lauded KCM for the impressive investment the company has put in place particularly the Konkola Deep Mining Project.
