KONKOLA Copper Mines (KCM) has dismissed 15 senior officers and deregistered seven contractors and suppliers for their alleged involvement in corruption contrary to the mining company’s procedures.

It is estimated that KCM has recorded a net loss of over US$ 1 million between 2008 and 2010 through white-collar crime.

“KCM has dealt with 148 incidents of white collar crime during the past two years and the company dismissed 15 senior staff and 59 general payroll workers and some 11 contract workers involved in inimical activities while 10 people have been convicted of crime and the company also deregistered seven contracting firms and suppliers,” KCM chief executive officer Kishore Kumar stated in the latest bulletin of Konkola News.

He stated that the formation of the integrity committee was aimed at dealing with all acts of corruption, fraud and thefts perpetrated by a few elements among the workforce.

“KCM will be equal to the challenges of ensuring it meets the aspirations of maintaining transparency and accountability at all levels of management and other employee structures,” stated Kumar.

And KCM has entered into a global alliance agreement with Sulzer Pumps of Switzerland aimed at meeting requirements across Vedanta’s copper and zinc sectors.

It is projected that a reliable pumping system will assist in achieving increased dewatered reserves and to rapidly achieve production ramp-up plan at Konkola.

“As part of the agreement, Sulzer will also fully equip and upgrade the existing service centre in Chingola in order to have a full facility of repair and overhaul services around KCM,” he stated

Illegal Mining War not over!

Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer Martin Malama says the war on illegal mining activities is not yet over.

Dr Malama says the police command is determined to work hard to flush out illegal miners in the province.

Speaking when he toured Konkola Copper Mines in Chingola, Dr Malama said police in conjunction with the mining company are carrying successful operations to curb illegal mining.

Dr Malama says mine employees who were under threat are now working freely without fear of being attacked by scavangers.

And KCM acting group security manager Peter Mulenga is happy with the police partnership with his company in curbing illegal mining.

Mr Mulenga says joint operations have led to discovery of motor vehicles and bags of copper concentrate.
