ama important ! : KCM eyes Mozambique’s mining sector
APA : Maputo (Mozambique) Zambia´s largest copper producer, Konkola Copper Mines is in talks with the Mozambican government officials over plans to invest in the former Portuguese colony´s untapped mineral resources, state-controlled Radio Mozambique reports here on Sunday.
The broadcaster said a high-profile KCM delegation met with Mozambique´s Mineral Resources Minister Esperança Bias to request mining opportunities in the untapped mineral-rich southern African nation.
"The (Mozambican) minister was recently in Zambia, where she had the opportunity to check the type of investments we are making in that country. It is in this context that we are here to see what opportunities exist for our company in the Mozambican market, "said KMC director of operations, Jeyakumar Janakaraj.
Janakataj said after this high-level meeting between representatives of his company and the Mozambican government, technical talks between the two parties will follow.
"There are deadlines to be met between the parties to proceed with specific projects," he said.
In addition to mining of metals and copper, in Zambia, KCM, a subsidiary of Vedanta Resources Plc – a London-based company, has operations in India and Australia.
Only in Zambia, KMC produces about 200,000 metric tons of copper cathodes per year. The cathodes are mainly sold in foreign markets, especially in the Middle and Far East, Southeast Asia and Japan.
KCM’s production is transported to these markets through leading African ports, including that of Beira in Mozambique, Dar-es- Salaam in Tanzania, and Durban in South Africa.
