BHP poised to offload Ravensthorpe
Global miner BHP Billiton Ltd is preparing to quit its Ravensthorpe nickel mine in Western Australia through a $300 million-plus sale to First Quantum Minerals, according to The Australian Financial Review newspaper.
The paper said while BHP had declined to comment on the deal, an announcement was expected by the end of the week.
Sources told the paper BHP had engaged a number of contractors to provide quotes for the value of dismantling the project for scrap.
Industry sources said First Quantum could be considering the purchase to reduce the political risk of its asset portfolio, which includes assets in Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Mauritania.
Industry sources said BHP was unable to upgrade the Ravensthorpe ore to a level which made the project commercially viable.
There has been talk that BHP is preparing to sell its Ravensthorpe mine since late June, when analysts suspected the project had been written down to a nil valuation.
