Mopani copper production to hit 175,000 tonnes

COPPER production at Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) is likely to hit 175,000 metric tonnes this year due to the US$1.5 billion the company has invested in sinking new shafts and other expansion projects.
MCM chief executive officer Chris Vermeulen said in an interview yesterday that the company has completed working a synclinorium shaft, which is now producing 3,000 metric tonnes of copper concentrates per day.
Mr Vermeulen said the shaft has helped prolong the lifespan of the mine, which could have wound up this year
