CLM guarantees workers safety
CHINA Luanshya Mines (CLM) has said the installation of computerised winders to enhance the hoisting system at the Baluba shaft will ensure efficient and reliable production and safety of miners.
Over 500 underground miners at CLM were last month placed on recess (but have now been recalled) to allow maintenance works and installation of modern automatic rock ore and man winders at a cost of US $ 4.5 million.
“2010 has been a breakthrough year in Luanshya, comparing with previous investors and what CNMC has done within one year, the Chinese have invested in modern machinery and equipment and the significance of rehabilitating the winding plant means there will be reliability to bring the ore to the surface on time and also safety for miners when going or coming from underground, hence we shall have efficient and increased production,” said CLM operations manager Pearson Mwale, during a media tour following the commissioning of the new winders on Thursday last week.
And CLM chief executive officer Luo Xingeng said the Baluba Hoisting system was established in 1938 and has never undergone maintenance works. “We suspended production at the time when copper prices are very high (over US$ 9,000 per metric tonne), we had no alternative but to carry out rehabilitation works which we have done within 45 days and we are happy to see mutual cooperation through application of efforts by from both Chinese and Zambian experts and we hope to continue working together in carrying out future projects,” said Luo
