800 employees may lose jobs at Luanshya Copper Mine

OVER 800 employees at the newly re-opened China Non-Ferrous Metal Mining Luanshya Copper Mine, are threatened with job losses after management sent them on forced recess to pave way for maintenance works.
Mine public relations manager Sydney Chileya confirmed yesterday that 807 workers from processing and underground operations, had been sent on ‘leave’ following management’s decision to temporarily close the mine to facilitate rehabilitation of the hoisting system.
He said 807 out the total 2,528 employees would go on recess leaving 1,721 to do the work during the rehabilitation process and stressed that they would be recalled on a tentative date.
There are growing fears that the 800 workers who among the 1500, republican President Rupiah boasts of having helped secure jobs at the mine in the midst of the global economic downturn at the mine will never go back to work.
Although management has stated that the rehabilitation works would take less than two months, there is a feeling among locals that the workers might be replaced by a number of Chinese expatriates, some of whom are already working at the mine.
