A CONSIGNMENT of 30 tonnes of copper valued at 229,000 USD (350m/-) was stolen in Bagamoyo District, Coast Region, while on transit from Kitwe Zambia to Dar es Salaam ready for export.
The Managing Director of Smart Transport which transported the cargo, Mr Walid Nahdi told the 'Daily News' that the consignment was off loaded from the truck numbered T 567 BAR with trailer number T 861 BGB driven by one Ahmed Amin Nuru (39), a resident of Dar es Salaam who abandoned the truck and varnished.
“A spot check at his home in Kimara also found that his wife was also at large and we are still working on reports by eye witnesses that the driver had another man in the truck which was parked at Bagamoyo bus stand on that particular day,” he said.
According to Mr Walid, the truck loaded the cargo at Mopani Mines in Kitwe, Zambia where it left on September 27 and crossed the Tunduma border the following day and was once seen in Buguruni area before it was later abandoned in Bagamoyo.
He said after they waited for the cargo to be delivered at the Dar es Salaam port in vain on October 4, he decided to report to the Central Police Station the same day, when the truck was discovered abandoned in Bagamoyo.
“We have not come to the conclusion of this matter since the incident is still under the police investigation, but it is very unfortunate that this has happened when the country is wooing businessmen and investors to come and trade in the country using the popular Dar es Salaam port,” he commented.
The Dar es Salaam Police Zone Commander Suleiman Kova declined to comment on the matter and advised the reporter to contact the Coast Region Police Commander (RPC), Mr Absalom Mwakyoma whose phone was not reached.
