GOVERNMENT has given Kariba Minerals Limited of Kalomo's Mapatizya area a four-day ultimatum to settle outstanding salary arrears for their workers. The arrears are for three months.
Labour deputy minister, Rayford Mbulu, issued the ultimatum when he visited the Amethyst Mine co-owned by Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Investment Holdings and Gemfields Group Company to ascertain the compliance of industrial relation laws.
He said the government would not tolerate excuses from employers who violate the law.
Mbulu said employers should stop denting the government's image to the public through their inability to fulfill terms and conditions of their collective bargains.
He urged employers in the country to respect conditions agreed upon with their workers to avoid disruptions in operations.
Mbulu said the government cared for all people in the country regardless of their regional and political affiliation.
"As government, we appreciate your contribution to the country's economy as a company but you have violated the laws, Cap 269 of the Laws of Zambia, can you subrogate yourselves to the situation of your workers whom you have not been paying for three months," he said.
Mbulu said time to stop dumping unnecessary problems on the government had come, hence the need for all people to change for the better.
He directed management at the mine to travel to Lusaka head office to discuss with their superiors how they could liquidate the outstanding arrears as well as normalise the salaries to avoid further unrest.
Kariba Minerals Ltd finance manager, Samuel Sinkamba, said his company was not operating at full capacity due to lack of resources.
He said the company was currently not making profit, hence the difficulties in paying workers.
"The equipment we have can't run at full capacity otherwise its true our workers have not been paid for the past three months and as management, we are finding it difficult to resolve the problem because already security here is compromised, the workers almost became unruly on Saturday," said Sinkamba.
