KCM saga: Govt blame ZCCM-IH

FOREIGN Affairs Minister Wylbur Simuusa has blamed Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines-Investment Holdings (ZCCM-IH) for not alerting and giving Government proper advice regarding the happening at Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) in Chingola.

The Minister said ZCCM-IH has not lived up to its mandate of acting like Government watchdog for the happenings in the mines.
Speaking at the business forum organized by Chingola Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Chingola, Mr Simuusa said ZCCM-IH holds much interest in the mines by virtue of shares it has nearly in all the mines.

Mr Simuusa who is Nchanga Member of Parliament said Government entrusted ZCCM-IH with the responsibility of providing guidance to the mines and giving Government technocrat advice on the best way to handle the mining investor in the country.

He said sadly though, even the much talked about saga at KCM. ZCCM-IH has remained mute forcing the Head of State to speak out and arrest the situation.

Mr Simuusa who is also PF chairperson for Mines said ZCCM-IH is a well placed institution that has all the expertise to offer best advice but it seems there is an error at ZCCM-IH.

He however told the members of the chamber that KCM has still some life and copper reserves in the upper ore body.

Mr Simuusa the mining engineer himself said once Vedanta Resources opt to pull out, he was optimistic many others will queue up to invest in KCM.

The Minister said his Government will not allow déjà vu of Binani saga to happen in Chingola like it happened in Luasnhya where over 3, 000 employees lost jobs.

He said if Vedanta has intention of pulling out of KCM because of higher operational costs his Government will ensure that it pays all suppliers and contractors it owes, the money he said is in billion dollars.

And Chingola chamber president Freddie Musonda said the chamber is an interested group that was why it had to organize the meeting to know Government’s position on KCM saga.

Mr Musonda said though his members have started diversifying from mining, most of them are owed by the mines and any lack of deliberate effort to push the mines to pay the suppliers and the contractors may see business dwindle further.

Laf1986,
