Zambia’s first ever thermal plant, Maamba is now operating at commercial capacity, Maamba Collieries Chief Executive Officer Venkat Shankar said in an interview in Sinazongwe. The $843million investment is now generating 150MW of the 300MW capacity and firing into the national grid to ease the current deficit.
Maamba needs 1.7million tons of coal annually which Izuma A and B pit mines will supply, Maamba Collieries Mine Manager Scott Phiri said. Recent coal discoveries will make generation capacity widen over a very long period he said.
