Vedanta to start Konkola Copper Mine Nchanga unit in Zambia
Friday, 11 Dec 2009
London listed Vedanta Resources Plc has proposed to start a granulated slag dump to treat copper concentrates at its Konkola Copper Mine Nchanga unit in Zambia in the next 20 years to increase output.
According to an assessment report submitted to the Zambia Environmental Agency, LML34 is within the existing Konkola Copper Mine Plc’s licence area which lies adjacent to block A open pit along the South to South East rim of the pit.
The report said that the site was previously used as an ore stockpile dump, a large part of which has since been reclaimed by the company.
According to the report, the new plant is expected to treat copper concentrates from Nchanga, Konkola as well as from our sources that are not directly operated by Konkola Copper Mine Plc. The smelting process involves the treatment of copper concentrate in the electric furnace with a flux.
Report said that “The final products are mainly matter and slag with the matte being processed further to produce copper anodes. It is estimated that the life of the project will be about 20 years at an average slag production rate of 540,000 tonnes per annum.”
Konkola Copper Mine, which produces about 250,000 tonnes of copper per annum, seeks to meet more than half the country’s expected copper output by 2010 and meet the increasing demand on the international metal market.
Zambia envisions increasing copper output to more than 1,000,000 tonnes of finished copper by 2010 from the current 600,000 tonnes because of the increased investment in the copper and mining industry by among other mining giants, China Non Ferrous Metals Corporation, Glencore AG International, First Quantum and Vedanta Resources Plc.
