Konkola Copper Mines and Zambia Railways limited have signed a memorandum of Understanding for the transportation of lime from Ndola Lime to the KCM plant in Chingola.

The Signing ceremony which was witnessed by Transport and Communications permanent Secretary Muyenga Atanga will see 10 thousand tonnes of Lime delivered to KCM from Ndola Lime per month by Zambia railways.

Dr Atanga says government is negotiating with Mine houses to ensure they use Zambia Railways and TAZARA to transport Cargo instead of using roads.

He says government is concerned with the damage inflicted on the country’s roads through transportation of heavy duty equipment and metals by trucks.

And Zambia Railways Limited Chief Executive officer Clive Chirwa says his firm will provide the service to the satisfaction of KCM.

Earlier KCM Head Marketing , Sales and logistics Amol Mehra says the mining giant has always preferred rail transport.

Zambia Railways limited and KCM are also discussing a deal to transport Copper Arnolds from Chingola to Nkana and Copper cathodes all the way to Dar a Salaam.ZNBC
