Vedanta Resources’ Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) is considering venturing into Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in a bid to consolidate its position as a major copper producer in the African copperbelt.
Brad Gnanasivan, KCM's director of strategy and business development, told the Metal Bulletin African Copper III conference in Lusaka that venturing into the DRC is a natural step for KCM, some of whose mining operations are located near the border in the north-west province of Zambia.

The African copperbelt straddles the border of DRC and Zambia, and companies such as Glencore International have copper and cobalt mining operations in both countries.

Gnanasivan said that KCM is continuously carrying out exploration work within its licence area, adding that there is huge potential across the border in DRC.

KCM’s key operations are located in Shililabombwe, Chingola and Nampundwe, areas which are adjacent to the border with the DRC.

Gnanasivan said that the Indian metals giant would also look into other markets such as Botswana and Namibia.

“We continue to explore for fresh deposits within our existing mining area. There is still huge potential there within that license area,” Gnanasivan said.

“We have also started to look beyond our boundaries, out of the country and into neighbouring DRC. We are looking for opportunities for greenfield projects as well,” he added.
