vedanta results Q1

Highlights

· Record Q1 EBITDA, up 33% at US$ 1,055 million

· Refined Zinc production up 17% at Zinc-India

· Commenced commissioning of 100 ktpa Dariba lead smelter

· Aluminium production up 46% at Jharsuguda

Copper ― Zambia

Our integrated production during Q1 FY2011-12 was 3% higher at 35,000 tonnes as compared with the corresponding prior quarter. Production from the tailings leach plant was 16% higher at 13,000 tonnes. Total copper cathode production was 50,000 tonnes, as compared with 55,000 tonnes in the corresponding prior quarter, because production from custom smelting was lower by 6,000 tonnes due to limited availability of the appropriate blend of copper concentrate. Mined metal production was 24,000 tonnes, in line with the corresponding prior quarter.

EBITDA was significantly higher at US$ 131.8 million on account of higher LME prices and higher integrated production, partially offset by increases in wages and other input costs.

At KDMP, a significant milestone was achieved with the completion of sinking of Shaft 4 to its ultimate depth. At Nchanga, work on the new concentrators, the Upper Ore Body project, the TLP Debottlenecking project and the second cobalt recovery furnace is progressing as planned.

Ou l'on reparle de Konkola

Vedanta posts record Q1 EBITDA of $1.06 bln

Fri Jul 29, 2011 2:53am EDT

* Q1 EBITDA rises 33 pct to $1.055 bln, sales up 44 pct

* Refined zinc production up 17 pct

* Iron ore down 23 pct to 4.4 million tonnes

* Zambian copper cathode output down 9 pct (Adds details)

LONDON, July 29 (Reuters) - India-focused mining group Vedanta posted record first-quarter core earnings, driven by continued strength in metals prices and higher zinc production.

The London-listed firm said earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) increased 33 percent to $1.055 billion in the three months to the end of June. Sales jumped 44 percent to $3.4 billion.

First-quarter output of refined zinc, Vedanta's most profitable product, rose 17 percent to 193,000 tonnes on higher volumes from the Dariba zinc smelter commissioned in March 2010.

Subsidiary Hindustan Zinc has already reported first-quarter results marginally above expectations, with zinc output up 17 percent and a 70 percent jump in its bottom line.

Production of iron ore, hit by a ban on shipments from the Indian state of Karnataka and the discontinuation of mining operations at Orissa, dropped 23 percent to 4.4 million tonnes.

Vedanta unit Sesa Goa , India's largest iron ore exporter, said last week that net profit was down 36 percent in the quarter after a 12 percent drop in iron ore sales.

Zambian copper cathode output fell 9 percent on limited availability of the appropriate blend of copper concentrate.

Vedanta has said it plans to list a stake in its Zambian unit, Konkola Copper Mines, but the ambition to cash in on avid demand for assets in the Zambian copperbelt has been on ice since late last year, given market volatility and uncertainty over valuations.

Last month the Indian government granted Vedanta a long-awaited approval to buy a stake in British oil group Cairn Energy's Indian business. The sale has been delayed for almost a year due to a disagreement over royalty payments. (Reporting by Clara Ferreira-Marques and Julie Crust; editing by Neil Maidment)

Re: vedanta results Q1
