The transmission assets including sub-stations and power lines valued at US$35 million have been commissioned in CEC’s northern area and were financed by KCM and remained in the ownership of KCM but are expected to be transferred to CEC in 2010.
Giving an update on the matter, CEC managing director for corporate development Michael Tarney stated that CEC has signed an agreement with KCM to repay the costs of the assets over a number of years.
“These assets have been commissioned in our northern area to facilitate the supply of power to KCM’s new smelter at Nchanga and the deep mine at Konkola and the assets were financed and owned by KCM but following signature of the final handover certificate by the prime contractor, ABB Finland, KCM is expected to transfer these assets to CEC,” Tarney stated.
“CEC has signed an agreement with KCM to repay the cost of the assets over a number of years provided that threshold targets for the incremental sale of electricity from CEC to KCM are achieved.”
Tarney stated that a number of families were required to be relocated as a result of the construction of a new transmission line in Konkola and CEC constructed alternative accommodation for the affected families in the vicinity.
He stated that CEC has completed agreements with Congolese utility SNEL and its financier, the World Bank to commence construction of the Zambian section of a dual circuit 220 kilo volt interconnector between Zambia and the DR Congo.
“The construction of the line has been advertised for international competitive tender and the project is expected to cost US $ 16.2 million and construction of the project is expected to commence by mid 2010 and commissioning of the line is expected by the second quarter of 2011 to coincide with the completion of works in the DR Congo,” stated Tarney.
“An environmental impact assessment and environmental management plan were prepared and have been implemented in line with local and international regulations.”
