The province's secretary, Daniel Bowasi, said the new Kalumbila mine, about which further details would be announced by First Quantum on Tuesday, would gradually compare in size to Kansanshi, the country's largest mine by output.
"This is a big project which will turn north-western province into Zambia's new Copper belt and contribute a lot of resources to the treasury through taxes," Bowasi said.
First Quantum also operates Kansanshi mine, which contributed 230,800 tonnes of copper to the 2010 total production of about 740,000 tonnes for Africa's top producer of the metal.
