KANSANSHI Mine has retrieved a government excavator which sank in Kimasala River as it cleared storm drains.
Kansanshi public relations manager Godfrey Msiska said in a press statement that the 15 tonne Komatsu excavator was undertaking some tasks when it went halfway down the river last week.
He said the mine, upon request by the North Western provincial administration, mobilised its resources to take the excavator out of the water.
“Kansanshi mobilised a team of engineers, riggers and safety officers to undertake the rescue mission. Kansanshi had to take a 70 tonne crane to assist in the rescue operation which proved quite challenging as the excavator was deep in the mud on the riverbed," Msiska said.
And Msiska has said Kansanshi has allocated US$ 1 million to the rehabilitation works on the Chingola-Solwezi road, while US $2.2 million would be spent on modernising Solwezi General Hospital, including further funding of upgrading the local airport to international standards.
