feasibility studies on underground mining at Kansanshi
Tuesday, 27 Jul 2010
First Quantum Mining is undertaking feasibility studies on the possibility of underground mining at its Kansanshi Copper Mines in north western Zambia to expand its operations.
Mr Braston Sichinsambwe Kansanshi mine senior safety and health officer said that the company was actively undertaking feasibility studies to broaden the operation of the mining company in the Southern African state and challenged the business community in Solwezi to actively support the company.
Mr Sichinsambwe urged that the people to acquaint themselves with the safety and health environment requirements. Kansanshi is expanding, we started with one crusher but now we are operating 3 crushers and we are still expanding as we will soon start underground mining. The contractor is already on the site conducting feasibility studies for an inclined type of underground mining.
He urged that suppliers and contractors to familiarize themselves with the Kansanshi mine’s safety, saying safety is the company’s number one priority.
The mine has observed that a number of contractors engage employees without giving them certificates of fitness as required by law. The mine will not engage contractors who do not apply necessary safety equipment to employees. Kansanshi mine Plc is one of Zambia's leading copper producers, Africa's main producer of the metal.
