FQM to improve Gold recoveries
By Times Reporter
FIRST Quantum Minerals (FQM) plans to pursue options to improve gold recoveries and increase sulphide ore treatment capacity by 10 per cent at Kansanshi Mine in Solwezi.
According to the presentation posted on the company website, FQM plans this year to increase flotation capacity to complement higher ore treatment capacity and install additional concentrators to increase gold production at the mine.
The Company recently announced that gold production significantly increased in 2009, achieving a quarterly record of 32, 476 ounces in the forth quarter due to increased ore throughput and plant upgrades.
The gold production for the year at Kansanshi copper -gold mine, where FQM has 80 per cent stake, stood at 99,936 compared to 54,252 ounces produced the previous year in 2008.
And FQM announced in the presentation that it acquired Kiwara exploration projects in Zambia for cash and shares valued at about US$260m in January 2010, with the main asset a controlling interest in mineral prospecting licences covering 2,850 Km2 on the periphery of the Kabombo Dome.
The statement said the Kiwara exploration project included the Kalumbila copper deposit in North-Western province –undergoing infill drill programme to establish indicated resource on the open-pittable mineralisation.
The project also includes the Kawako nickel and the Kawanga uranium prospects.
FQM, also owners of Bwana Mkubwa in Ndola, said its 2010 exploration programme included the Kansanshi – drill programme to delineate extent and geometry of new prospect identified approximately 2km from the main pit and the Kalumbila – intensive drill programme.
FQM projects to produce about 385,000 tonnes of copper this year, expected to rise to 420,000 tonnes from 2013, and anticipate gold production to increase by almost 25 percent to 240,000 ounces this year.
