Chibuluma Mines embarks on expansion programme

HONE SIAME, Kitwe
CHIBULUMA Mines Plc has embarked on an expansion programme aimed at extending its mining operations from 2017 to 2020.
The mining firm has gone into exploration to develop the Chifupu Copper Project that will not only extend the lifespan of the mine, but also save over 500 workers from retrenchment by 2017.
Chibuluma Mines community and social services manager Margaret Mwale said in an interview that the mining firm, whose annual copper production stands at 18,000 tonnes, wants to continue with its operations beyond 2017.
Ms Mwale said the Chifupu project is expected to contribute to the growth of the country’s economy once completed, through increased copper production. She said the project will also supplement Government’s efforts in creating jobs for the citizens.
Chibuluma Mines has created 520 direct jobs for Zambians.
“We want to explore an ore body located about two kilometres on the south-west of our mine. We want to continue with our operations beyond 2017.We will be able to reach the ore within the next six months,” Ms Mwale said.
Chibuluma Mines is located in Lufwanyama district on the Copperbelt Province, about 15km from Kalulushi.
The mining firm, which boasts of producing high-grade copper running between 3 percent and 3.5 percent, contributes 2 percent to Zambia’s copper production.
