MOPANI MINE
By Maya Ntanda -

CONSTRUCTION works of the synclinorium shaft at the cost of US$ 320 million by Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) in Kitwe is on track.

Project manager Jack Dabrowski said about 30 percent of the works had so far
been done and the project was expected to create more than 3,000 jobs when operational in 2015.

Mr Dabrowski said when Labour and Social Security Deputy Minister Ronald Chitotela toured the project more than 300 workers had been employed during the construction period.

He said the synclinorium shaft was going to add value to the production of copper at the mine and was expected to extend the life span of the mine by 25 years .

“The construction of the synclinorium shaft is on course and it is
progressing very well. We have done about 30 percent of the works,” he
said.

And Mr Chitotela commended MCM for investing in capital projects that were helping to
create sustainable jobs for the local people.

Mr Chitotela urged the mining company to continue investing such projects as they
helped create employment opportunities for the local people.
