Mopani Copper spends USD 10 million on social responsibility projects

Mopani Copper Mine, a unit of global commodity trader and Swiss based, Glencore AG International ploughed more than USD 10.5 million into face lifting of roads and other infrastructure as part of the company’s social responsibility program.

One of the projects being undertaken as part of the company’s social responsibility is the financing of the road networking in among other towns, where it operates, Kitwe which on August 20th 2011 was commissioned by Mr Rupiah Banda president of Zambia.

Mr Banda had during the commissioning of the road project valued about USD 10.5 million reiterated the need for investors, Mopani Copper Mines alike, to plough back into the communities as part of the real returns for the local people.

Mr Emmanuel Mutati outgoing CEO of Mopani following his appointment to head the company’s board said that the road rehabilitation program embarked upon in May this year is a significant way marker of the USD 10.5million road redevelopment project.

The company had earmarked to improve Central, Mindolo and Chibuluma roads in Kitwe a total of 6.5 kilometers which are expected to be finished later this year; the 19 kilometers Sabina and Mufulira road improvements are to be finished by the Q2 of 2012. Additionally, the sanitation infrastructure project is taking place in Wusakile Township, a mining town of Kitwe on the copperbelt which and began in April this year and is being carried out in collaboration with the Zambia’s government and Nkana Water and Sewerage Company. Construction of some 1,500 individual sanitation facilities is well underway in Wusakile at a cost of USD 4.5 million. Township residents are already starting to benefit from hygienic toilets, showers and drinking water taps.

Mr Mutati stated that the company was happy to be associated with the developments in the affected towns were it undertakes mining activities. Mopani spent over US$15 million on ongoing community projects in 2010. It currently operates two hospitals, seven health clinics, five first aid centres and public health departments near its Nkana and Mufulira sites.

The company also runs four schools for 2,100 pupils, oversees HIV and malaria prevention and control programs and supports local orphanages, charities and sports clubs. Retired miners have also been provided with opportunities for post retirement employment at a Mopani supported farm near Mufulira. In 2011 Mopani expects to spend substantially more on community projects than in 2010 as, recently announced, road and sanitation projects boost spending.

Mr Mutati reiterated his company’s willingness to contribute to meet the aspirations of Zambians adding that it has since stepped up its communication strategy to co exist with the people through information awareness on all its programs. Prior to April 2011, Mopani Copper Mines Plc was generally media shy and adopted an approach of quiet achievement. However, the misrepresentation and generally negative reporting, in both local and foreign media, prompted the company to re look at its approach to communication and publicity.

According to data, Mopani Copper Mines plc is a Zambian registered company, owned venture through Carlisa Investments Corporation, a joint venture company comprising Glencore International AG with 73.1% stake and First Quantum Minerals Limited with 16.9% equity while Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Investment Holdings having 10%. The Zambian government retains a significant minority interest in Mopani via ZCCM-IH. Minority shareholders are spread throughout the world in various locations. Mopani produces and sells copper and cobalt to the international market. The company operates mines in the towns of Kitwe and Mufulira, which are located on the Zambian Copperbelt.
