Mufulira to have cement, lime plant

NKWETO MFULA, Mufulira
A CHINESE Firm, Chamfa Resources Limited has expressed interest to set up a multi-million Kwacha cement and lime plant in Mufulira.
Mufulira District Commissioner Chanda Kabwe said the mining company has already applied for an exploration licence from the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Natural Resource Development.
“Chamfa Resources Limited has already been to Zambia Development Agency and the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Water Development to ensure that they can be given the exploration licence to embark on the feasibility study on the establishment of a greenfield cement manufacturing plant and be part to the economic growth of Mufulira,” Mr Kabwe said in an interview.
Mr Kabwe said the establishment of the cement plant will result in thousands of jobs being created.
Recently, Chamfa Resources Limited president a Mr Hu led a 15-man delegation to Mufulira to check on the investment opportunities in the district.
Mr Kabwe said that the establishment of a cement and lime plant in Mufulira will cushion the high demand for the commodity in the country.
“President Sata turned Zambia into a big construction site which has in turn pushed the high demand for cement,” he said
He said the few cement manufacturing plants in the country are unable to cope with the high demand for the commodity in the country.
Chamfa Resources Limited, the mining firm currently doing exploration of copper at Old Mokambo Mine also intends to set up a tile manufacturing plant in Mufulira.
“The company want to make Zambia a hub for the Southern African region in the manufacturing of tiles to be exported to neighbouring countries and beyond,” he said.
Mr Kabwe said other stakeholders should come on board to enhance the economic development of the district.
He said some international investors have expressed interest to invest in various sectors in Mufulira.
“Government’s good investment policies and the peace prevailing in the country have resulted in international investors expressing interest to do business in Zambia,” he said.
Mr Kabwe said the international community is confident with the policies of the Government and are eager to establish various economic ventures in Mufulira.
He cited the plans by some foreign investors to construct housing units as part of the other business ventures earmarked for the district.
