-Rising copper mining operations pushes up power demand in Zambia
Monday, 31 Aug 2009

DJ quoted Zambia’s largest supplier of power to copper and cobalt mines, Copper belt Energy Corporation as saying that power consumption by copper mines had increased due to expansion projects at key mining installations on the Copper Belt province.CEC said that expansions and upgrades at Mopani Copper Mine and Konkola Copper Mines as well as the resumption of operations at Luanshya Copper Mines had pushed power consumption to up to 700 MW from around 430 MW.

MCM is a JV between Swiss commodity traders; Glencore International AG and Toronto listed First Quantum Minerals Limited while KCM is owned by London listed Vedanta Resources PLC.

CEC said that there is need to increase power supply to copper mines by 25% in the next 2 years to avoid a power crisis.

CEC procures power from Zambia's state power utility, Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation or Zesco to supply to copper and cobalt mines on the Copper Belt province. CEC saw subdued power demand between the middle of 2008 and early this year because of reduced mining operations due to low global metal prices. However, the recovery of global metal prices has increased mining operations stretching power demand.

According to industry officials, new mining projects at LCM, Chambishi metals as well as KCM's deep mine project are expected to increase power demand to 800 MW by 2011.

CEC is now improving its regional interconnection infrastructure to maintain reliable power supply to copper mines. Zesco is also implementing various upgrades to increase power output.

Zambia's annual copper output is expected to hit 750,000 tonnes in 2010 a figure last recorded in the 1970s when the country was the world's fourth leading copper producer.
