By NKWETO MFULA
Ces of copper ore at Baluba mine at its phase one project by December 15, 2009.
And CNMC says Muliashi open pit mine will be operational in early 2011 with a production capacity of 35,000 tonnes of copper cathodes per month.
Company deputy chief executive officer Gao Xiang said the 750,000 tonnes is half the expected total production of copper at the mine.
“We expect to start production with a capacity of 750,000 tonnes per month, which is half the capacity of the total production expected to be mined,” he said.
Mr Gao said the company will increase production capacity once all obsolete equipment is maintained.
He said the lifespan for Baluba mine is expected to last for the next 15 to 20 years.
And Mr Gao said Chinese experts have completed the design of Muliashi open pit mine.
He said the company will commence the construction of a leach plant to be completed by end of 2010.
“The experts working on the design are now making final touches to the Muliashi open pit mine plan,” he said.
He said the production capacity for the leach plant will be 35,000 tonnes of copper cathodes per month.
Mr Gao said CNMC is committed and will use new mining methods at the mine in Luanshya.
He further said that the company is planning to make shaft 28, which has been flooded, operational.
“We expect to come up with a budget for shaft 28, which has been flooded. Pumping of water can take up to three to five years,” he said.
Mr Gao said the operationalising of shaft 28 will increase the production levels of copper ore at the mine.
He said the economy of the district has improved following the reopening of the mine.
Mr Gao said the skill transfer by Chinese experts will benefit the people of Luanshya and the nation as a whole.
He said the company will ensure that it plays its role in social corporate responsibility.
