CHINA Luanshya Mines has installed new machinery at its concentrator plant which will result in increased efficiency.
Mine metallurgist Victor Chongo said rehabilitation works and installation of new equipment were on target.
He said the mine was only producing copper concentrates and all materials were crushed into one bulk product but cobalt would be produced when prices improve.
“So far, we have installed mill balls and crushers to increase production to expected capacity of crushing 300 tonnes of ore materials per day and we have new equipment at the concentrator that will result in increased efficiency and improved recovery of copper from 20 per cent to 30 per cent grade in concentrates,” said Chongo during the Copperbelt provincial MMD leadership’s tour of the mine. “Actually efficiency has gone up since we used to produce about 18 per cent during the time of LCM but now we are producing 20 per cent which we shall upgrade to 30 per cent with the new machinery.”
Company head of analytical services Golden Chilukuta said the entire mine plant was undergoing modernisation.
“We have installed dust suppression system to trap dust emissions and all copper elements and this will increase production and to meet environmental standards and we have for the first time ever at Luanshya mines a separation column and a tailing pump house is under construction and for most projects completion target is mid 2011. We have in house training for operators of these equipment to ensure effective skills’ transfer,” Chilukuta said.
And MMD provincial vice chairman Frank Ng’ambi expressed satisfaction with the equipment being installed at the mine.
“We are happy to see that the investors are not only using equipment from China but also renowned brands such as Sandvik, ABB, Siemens and many others from Europe. This shows that this investor is serious to enhance production, creation of jobs as well as meeting environmental and safety standards,” said Ng’ambi.
