It is reported that China Non Ferrous Mining Corporation has completed 60% of the construction work at the USD 300 million Mulyashi Open pit mine in Zambia which is expected to be operational by December next year.
Mr Sydney Chileya company spokesperson said that the 60% of the work done involves the removal of the overburdened soil, the top soil covering copper oxide by Dura Limited which the mine is expected to maximize in the mining of copper ore has been removed, leaving little work to be done apart from the construction works.
According to Mr Chileya, Mulyashi open cast mine will be the first open pit to be opened by the end of next year and has seven caps of copper oxide. The seven caps of copper oxide translate into seven open pits at the same site that will be operational when production begins by December 2011.
China nonferrous metals corporation has since accelerated the acquisition of materials for the construction of a leach plant at the open pit mine in readiness for the processing of copper ore by next year. The production capacity for Mulyashi mine has been forecast at 60,000 tonnes of copper cathodes per annum and that 1,000 employees are expected to be engaged when production starts.
The Chinese company has brought in experts from China to ensure that the works at the open pit mine were on scheduled and within the estimated two-year time frame.
Mr Chileya said that the experts ensured that all resources were doubled and enhanced to ensure that the mines became operational by December 2011. Mining prospects in Luanshya are bright as there are other oxide caps at Mushiba and Kafubu sites within the vicinity of Mulyashi open pit mine. Kashiba has five caps while Kafubu has six, enough to ensure the sustainability of the mine.
Works for Mushiba and Kafubu sites will start when all logistics are put in place after Mulyashi becomes productive. Mulyashi mine’s lifespan is estimated at 30 to 35 years. Presently, China Non Ferrous Metals has constructed and completed an office block housing contractors at Mulyashi open pit to speed up the work.
