OPERATIONS at Chambishi Metals PLC are only expected to resume in a month’s time after fire swept through the SX plant on Thursday afternoon.
And a miner on Wednesday night died underground at Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) in Chililabombwe after a suspected rock fall.
Mine Workers Union of Zambia (MUZ) secretary general Oswell Munyenyembe confirmed both incidents yesterday.
Munyenyembe said the cause of the fire at the SX plant had not yet been established but that investigations were still going on.
He said fire engines from Kitwe and Chingola managed to put out the fire.
“But from what I have been told, it’s like it will take one month before operations resume. We don’t actually know how the fire started and no injuries were recorded,” Munyenyembe said.
He said the extent of the damage to the plant was still being assessed.
And Munyenyembe said a contractor Field Simwanza working for Redrizza Drilling Company died at shaft No. 3 around 21:30 hours on Wednesday.
“But even there, we really don’t know what happened. At first we thought it was a rock fall but after investigations, it appears not to be a rock fall because where there is a rock fall, you expect some blood or injuries on the body but in this case there was none,” said Munyenyembe.
He said the actual cause of death would only be known after results of the post-mortem.
